Lindsey Clarke reports from Owenea Fishery – Monday 20th to Sunday 26th July 2015.
The Owenea had fair water levels on Monday & Tuesday (0.2m) but the river dropped over the following days. Saturday gave fair levels again (0.18m) but Sunday brought heavy rain and the river rose rapidly to a virtually unfishable state over the day! The gauge average for the week was decent at 0.21 metres but this was due mainly to the big flood on Sunday. The river was reasonably busy with 39 visiting rods fishing over the week. There were fair numbers of salmon reported too and given here are some of the catches taken from the Catch Register in the Angling Centre. On Tuesday, Thomas Irvine recorded a 5lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 8. Hugh Frazer logged a 4lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 4 and Michael McCrory reported a 10lb salmon caught on a fly from beat 5. On Wednesday, Brian Smith recorded a 5lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 9 and Michael McCrory accounted for a 3½lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 9. On Thursday, Billy Blair recorded 2 grilse weighing 4 & 5lb caught on a fly from beat 8. On Friday, Davy Arbuckle reported a 12½lb salmon caught on a fly from beat 8 and John Joe Doherty accounted for 2 grilse weighing 5 & 6lb caught on a fly from beat 9. The forecast for the coming week is for showers that may be heavy at times and prospects are looking good for salmon angling .
