Billy Downes, Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association, reports on the fishing on the Laune…

As of Thursday 18th June the water level is now at .8m, about 1 foot 3 inches, at Johnston’s. Still OK water for all methods but you would prefer if it was higher for fly and spinning.  But the lower water does slow fish on their ascent of the river improving chances.  Despite the less than ideal conditions there was a good fish of 10 lbs caught at Johnston’s High Bank yesterday.

News of fish is scarce with the exception of John Hussey who landed a nice fish of 8lbs at Heffernan’s on Saturday evening on a Black Flying ‘C’.

On Sunday there were reports of fish caught on all methods from Beat 3 to Heffernan’s.  Among the lucky anglers were John Hussey who landed a lovely fish of 8lbs spinning a black Flying ‘C’ at Heffernan’s and Kathleen Collins landed a nice grilse of 5 lbs on worm.

The best fish came from Beat 3 it was 14 lbs.

There are a few sea trout being caught but nothing better that 1.5 lbs.

Nice fresh grilse on the fly from Beat 3 on Tuesday evening

Reminder: Start times on Beat 3 is 8am and not before that.  Reminder to visitors trout fishing on all Laune Anglers waters and on Beat 3 is by fly only on single handed rods with trout flies.  (No worms allowed for trout fishing)

Prospects:  Good but best chance of a fish is from Saturday to Tuesday while the commercial nets are not in operation and a few fish can run the river.
