The weather forecast put an end to any thoughts of putting a boat out on Wednesday so it was decided that bank fishing would be the order of the day.  A beautiful bright day on Wednesday 9th March saw angling guide Peter Cunningham from Drogheda head to Lough Muckno to try for one of the the lakes big pike, from the bank. The water level had dropped slightly over the last week and temperatures are also starting to rise. According to Les Harris in Lakeside Angling in Castleblayney, some nice fish had been caught recently including one fish that was reported to be over 30lbs. A number of pike in the twenties had also been taken recently and the latest 20lb+ fish had been taken last weekend and weighed in at 22lbs. The majority of these big fish have been taken by anglers bank fishing with sink and draw and popped up dead-baits producing the best results.

Following a quiet morning, Peter had changed over to a popped up dead-bait early in the afternoon to see if this would tempt a fish to take. After a few casts, a number of taps registered on Peters’ popped-up smelt signaled the presence of a fish and the line started to move off slowly. Tightening up into the run and striking Peter found himself into a hard fighting, well conditioned Muckno pike. A brief but hard fight saw the well conditioned fish carefully landed, weighed and photographed before being returned safely back to the lake. This beautiful hen fish was in magnificent condition and weighed in at just a tad over 17lbs.
