A mild November just went polar and we have a Status Yellow Weather Warning for Snow and Ice in place as I write. The fishing conditions to now have been pretty good for the time of year and anglers have enjoyed being out in pleasant enough weather…
Coarse anglers fishing a match at O’Briensbridge described the venue as sullen on Sunday. Catches were not great as water was gin clear and hardly moving. There was better fishing on Muckno, but still not easy, for anglers fishing another Winter League match there. Weights to about 10lb were returned.
A group of Belgian pike fishermen staying at Melview Lodge in Longford caught fish on a mix of lures and deadbaits from boat and shore. Over the week they fished in a mix of weather and overall deadbaits were best. Meanwhile Martin Lynch had a red letter day in Co. Cavan. Again it was deadbait that made the difference. Martin had 4 pike, the best being 23lb and a very impressive 29lb 2oz. this smashing fish wins Martin Catch of the Week.
The 5th Henry’s Tackleshop Irish Cod Championships were held by Sea Angling Ireland SAC on the evening of Saturday. Fishing was steady but cod were in short supply. Jimmy Kelly was crowned Cod Champion 2017 for catching the biggest cod on the night, while Joe Carley was the overall match winner. At the other end of the country the Killybegs Mariners were fishing their Winter League. There were plenty of fish in the before the tide started to ebb and some flounders were taken.
For trout anglers there were reports of good rainbow fishing at Knockaderry and Ardaire Springs.
Salmon anglers are reminded that the Wild Salmon and Sea Trout Tagging Scheme (Amendment) Regulations, 2017 to provide for the management of the wild salmon and sea trout fishery by Inland Fisheries Ireland in 2018 have been drafted and are available online. For more information see:
Met Eireann forecasts a cold and windy Saturday with sunny spells and further wintry showers, mainly in the north and west. Highest temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees. Northwesterly winds will be fresh or strong and gusty. Sunday will start cold, frosty and bright in the east but it will become cloudy in the west with outbreaks of rain and drizzle there later in the day. Afternoon temperature will rise to between 5 and 8 degrees in a light to moderate southwesterly breeze. Monday will be a showery and blustery day with showers turning heavy in the northern half of the county. Mid-day temperatures will be around 6 to 8 degrees but turning colder again in the fresh and gusty west to northwesterly wind. Tuesday will turn cold again but it will be sunny and overall mostly dry but showers will continue along western and northern coastal counties in a fresh northwest to northerly wind.
