Angling Season
The angling season on the Moy system is as follows: Salmon-1 February to 3O September; Sea Trout -1 February to 10 October; Brown Trout-1 February to 10 October.
Licenses and Permits
All anglers fishing for Salmon or sea trout must be in possession of a valid Salmon rod Licence, tags and a log-book. These can be purchased from tackle shops and a range of other outlets throughout the region. In addition, a permit from the fishery owner is normally required in order to fish for Salmon and/or sea tout, Details of owners on the Moy system are given in separate publications dealing with specific sections of the Moy catchment.
Safety
Most river channels in the Moy catchment area have undergone arterial drainage schemes in the past and this has resulted in some high banks. It is best to fish from the bank but in places this is impossible so chest or body waders are now an essential part of every angler’s equipment. A Personal Floatation Device should be worn when wading in rivers and anglers should be aware of possible sudden changes in river depth.
Large loughs such as Conn and Cullin can become dangerous in high winds They may have reefs or rocky shallows which can be hazardous even on a calm day. It is essential to be familiar with such waters and their hazards before going afloat unaccompanied. A ghillie or guide should be hired for the first few days of the tip. A lifejacket should be wom by each angler in the boat.
Access
Many angling waters are usually reached by passing through farmland and anglers are allowed this access by courtesy of local farmers. They will give a warm welcome but please respect their property, leave no litter and close all gates.
Conservation
In Ireland conservation is necessary to protect the variety of fish in our waters. Trout and Salmon can be vulnerable to over-fishing. It is fundamental to the future of our trout and Salmon fisheries that they be managed and used by anglers in a sustainable manner.
