Glen Brennan with a nice double figure pike from Lough Gowna.

The winter weather has really arrived here in Ireland in the past week with only very hardy anglers venturing out on mainly inland waters and even then, sport was limited although a few nice fish were captured and returned.

Coarse anglers were out on several locations this week.  There was some nice catches of small roach reported at Corstown Lake near Drumconrath.  Down in Carlow there was news of the successful club appointing children’s officers who hope to encourage many young anglers to take up the sport of fishing.  Senior executive committee members of the Carlow Coarse Angling Club attended a recent presentation ceremony at the Carlow County Council chambers to receive a special Bursary award from the Carlow Sports Partnership.  Another winter league match was held up on the Roslea Lakes near Enniskillen and catches of roach and skimmers dominated catches in the cold weather.

There was a reasonable turn out of forty four anglers who fished the latest qualifier of the Kingspan National Pike Championships at Lakan Lake near Ballyjamesduff.  There was plenty of small pike recorded on the day and the five qualifiers all took catches of over 11 lb. upwards to go forward to the final in May.  There is notice of pike match taking place at Lough Egish soon near Ballybay.  Glenn Brennan caught some nice pike on Lough Gowna and he sent in a nice picture of a double figure pike which he caught and returned and he wins our catch of the week.  There was some nice pike reported from a lake in the Castleblayney area of Co. Monaghan.

There was no sea angling reported this week except for a notice for the Cobh SAC who are running their popular light lines competitions during the winter and details of the events are published here.

As usual there was some nice rainbow trout reported to visitors to the popular Curragh Springs Fishery in Co. Kildare where many different flies produced some good sport.

Tight lines especially in Ireland,
