Mullet
Liam Kane wins Catch of the Week with this specimen mullet

Anglers have endured every kind of weather in the last week with frost, sleet, high winds, heavy rain and clear, bright sunshine each featuring at some stage. There has been extensive flooding in many parts of the country and coarse fisheries in the midlands and along the River Shannon and its tributaries have been particularly affected.

With much of the Shannon and midlands flooded it is not surprising that the Cavan, Monaghan and other fisheries in the north east fished best. Once again there were good reports from Lough Muckno where bags to 30lb were returned at an IADA competition there.

A young German angler fishing with angling guide Kenny Sloan caught his first ever pike, followed by his second, measuring 86cm and 74cm in length in the Foxford area despite difficult conditions. Corsican anglers fishing in the Cavan lakes with Pat McLoughlin also overcame difficult conditions to catch some good pike. Despite high, coloured water and a cold, hard breeze they had up to 14 fish a day with the best pike weighing 20 lbs. Some good pike were also reported from the Lower Shannon, Lough Erne and Lough Ramor.

Catch of the Week goes to Liam Kane for a fine 5lb 12oz mullet he had at Laytown during a spell of calm warm weather. Given the recent heavy weather at sea it is no surprise that there are only a few reports in from charter boats, but anglers who could get out when conditions allowed enjoyed some great sport. Shore anglers fishing with Paul Harris on the Beara had plaice to 3lb 9oz and bull huss to over 10lb. Luke Aston reports that the boat fishing at Courtmacsherry has been very good recently. Last week his anglers had big cod, ling and pollack as well as blue shark. Similarly there has been good late season fishing off the Clare coast where again good cod, ling and pollack have featured.

Inland Fisheries Ireland would like to remind all salmon and sea trout anglers to return their completed logbooks and any unused gill tags by the 19th October 2011 to their local IFI office. The return of logbooks and unused tags is required under the Wild Salmon and Sea Trout Tagging Scheme Regulations. Please see the Inland Fisheries Ireland websitel for more details.
