04/09 The Owenea ran at low summer levels from Monday to Thursday with the gauge only just reading over 0.10 metres. However, for the last three days of the week we received good water levels with a flood occurring on Friday (0.29m), Saturday (0.41m) and Sunday (0.23m). The gauge average for the week read 0.20 metres. The fishery was reasonably busy with 34 visiting rods fishing for 54 rod days.
The fishery fished well with a number of salmon/grilse recorded with most of these caught during the good water at the weekend. Given here are some of the catches from the week. On Monday, Niall Hosey recorded a 5½lb grilse caught on worm from beat 8. Young visiting French angler Helene Trividic accounted for a 2 lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 7. On Tuesday, Joe Tracy recorded a 3lb grilse caught on a worm. On Wednesday, Tony Fitzgerald logged a 2½lb caught. On Friday, Mickey McLoughlin recorded a 6lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 9. On Saturday, Jim McLean accounted for 3 grilse weighing 5, 3 & 3lb caught on a spinner from beat 8 with the two smaller fish being released. The forecast for the coming week is for wet weather and we should receive good water levels. Prospects look good once again!
