19/9/11 Lough Currane was on the wild side, but this didn’t stop Mr. Dona McCarthy of Waterville and the USA catching a fine specimen 10 lb. 3 oz. sea trout on the fly and I believe he had one mighty battle with my noble sea trout, so his ghillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy was telling me, and going by the strain on his face I would believe it, because I can tell you its no joke trying to hold a boat in those conditions, so congratulations to the both of them. In the sea trout department was Mr. Peter Twomey, who caught 3 juniors to his rod, fishing with his ghillie Mr. Tom O’Shea – [email protected] and staying with the sea trout Mr. John Kirwan of Dublin caught a fine sea trout on the troll, fishing with his ghillie Mr. Vincent Appleby – www.salmonandseatrout.com and just for the record we had a good crack from a salmon but the rascal lives on to fight another day. Wind SW fresh to strong with heavy rain at times in the afternoon. Amount of rainfall 5.7 mm and max air temperature was 15.8°C.
20/9/11 In the hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com one Angler from Germany, caught 6 sea trout and finished his day off with a Salmon in the 12 lb. class all caught on the fly and staying in www.lakelanshouse.com an Angler fishing in a hired out boat caught 6 sea trout from juniors up to 2 lb., also in good form in the sea trout fly department was Mr. Ladle, who caught 8 sea trout ranging from Juniors Up to 2.5 lb. fishing with his ghillie Mr. Neil O’Shea – www.oshealoughcurrane.com Amount of rainfall 0.1 mm and max air temperature 15.2°C. 21/9/11 Lough Currane was on the wild side with a strong WSW wind blowing down the lake, Anglers that did venture out here are their return’s, in the Fly department, the Bunion Party fishing with their ghillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy caught 5 juniors and finished their day off with a fine 7 lb. salmon, now to the total Sea trout department, Mr. Bob Am lung caught 2 Juniors on the drift, fishing with his ghillie Mr. Tom O’Shea – [email protected] staying in the drifting department, Mr Peter Ladle fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea – www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 3 Sea trout up to 2.5 lb. Wind as already stated, and there was good cloud cover with showers, amount of rainfall 0.8 mm and the max air temperature was 15.2°C.
22/9/11 there was some great fishing on the Waterville Fishery today, starting on Lough Currane. In the Fly department, Mr. Peter Liddell caught 5 Juniors fishing with his ghillie Mr. Neil O’Shea – www.oshealoughcurrane.com Mr. Chris McCullough from Yorkshire England, caught 5 sea trout ranging from Juniors up to 2 lb., fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea – [email protected] Now to the hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com Luxembourg Anglers Bob And Roma, caught 14 sea trout ranging from Juniors up to 2.5 lb. and finished their day off with a fine Grilse in the 5 lb. class. Now we cut across the valley to the river Inny, and staying with the Luxembourg, Mr. Jean Quintus caught a cracker of a Salmon in the 10 lb. class on the fly and Jean was also telling me so far on this visit to Waterville which began on the 15/9/11 he and his good friend, so far have caught 22 Juniors on the Lake a Grilse on the famous Butler pool – www.watervillegolflinks.ie Max air temperature 17.1°C.
23/9/11 Straight to the Hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com Mr. Donnie and Denis Collins caught 6 sea trout to their Boat, and Mr. Phil Cronin and Mr. Donald O’Reilly caught 2 sea trout a Junior and finished their day off with a fine Sea Trout 3.5 lb., and staying in the salmon and sea trout department, Mr Rob Elson of the UK caught a fine 10 lb. on the troll and caught 2 Sea Trout on the fly, fishing with his ghillie Mr. Bob Priestly. Wind SW fresh to strong with heavy rain this evening, amount of rainfall 8.6 mm and the max air temperature was 16.1°C. . 24/9/11 Straight to the salmon and sea trout department, Guests caught a fine grilse on the troll and finished their day off with 4 Juniors on the drift, fishing with their ghillie Mt. Tom O’Shea and @ [email protected] The Prince caught a fine grilse on the fly, fishing with his ghillie Mr. Vincent O’Sullivan – www.vincentsfishing.com Mr. Neil O’Shea – www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 1 Junior. Now we cut across the Valley to the River Inny and catch of the goes to Luxembourg Angler Mr. Raymond Pauli caught his ever Salmon on the fly so congratulations to him and just for the record his Salmon weighed in at 9 lb. Wind SW fresh with reasonable cloud cover. Max air temperature 16.0°C.
25/9/11 Lough Currane was on the wild side this morning, with a strong SW wind blowing across the Lake with heavy rain, but come midday, the Lake had calmed down, In the hired out boat department, Mr. Andy Young and his fishing partner fishing out of Waterville Boats – [email protected] caught 24 sea trout from Juniors up to 2.5 lb. That is your ration for this week, from your ghillie/guide and the Waterville fishery. No Spin No Fly’s just facts.
In addition to Vincent’s report I include the report from www.loughcurrane.com for Sunday 25th September 2011 on possibly the biggest salmon ever recorded on Lough Currane.
“Well, here we are entering the last week of the salmon season, so it is perhaps appropriate that the biggest salmon of the year has been caught, within these last few days, by Bruce Penwarden, a regular visitor to Lough Currane. He was out with his friends Jim Woodhead and Brian Malem, having hired one of ghillie Sylvester Donnelly’s boats for the day. The massive cock fish, which was caught on a trout fly on the drift was measured at 42 inches long with a girth of 20 inches. It was then returned and we understand that captor spent the best part of an hour making sure the fish was revived enough to swim strongly away. According to the Sturdy method of calculating weight for length the fish would have been of the order of 28 to 32 lb !! – possibly a little heavier, when it first entered the system. It is certainly the biggest salmon reported from Lough Currane for some years.”
