Angling Guide and journalist Mick Flanagan reports on Pike and Perch fishing on the midland lakes  in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath.

Midland report 6-12-12.

PERCH ON ENNELL.In recent weeks some cracking Perch have being caught on some of our bigger lakes, and Ennell is producing top quality fish. Last week we had ideal conditions for Jigging for Perch with light winds, and clear skies. I spent a few hours out on Ennell with Marty Smith, and we had some great sport catching up on twenty fish, and loosing many more. The Perch fishing here in the Midlands is catching on, and quite a few boats were out on Ennell. It can be quite cold on the Lake , so wrap up well and don’t forget the Flask.

MIDLAND PIKE ANGLERS. On Sunday December 2nd Midland Pike Anglers held their Christmas Pike competition. The venue was Boderg near Dromod, which is less that an hours drive from Mullingar. Its a huge span of water nesting on the mighty Shannon system. The day dawned wet and cold, and numbers were down for the competition due to the conditions. We launched at Drumod Pier, and fished from 10-30am right through till 4-30pm. At the lunchtime weigh-in only a few anglers had boated pike, and none breaking 10lbs.   The water was colored after the heavy rainfall, and it was bright lures on the day. I switched over the a very Orange colored 4 inch Rapala plug, and to my amazement got a huge Trout.  We took a quick photograph of this super fish, and released it to continue on its spawning adventure.  On the day 2 trout were caught trolling for pike, so I might just venture to Boderg early in the new season for a few days Trout fishing. It’s a beautiful Lake, and hopefully on my next trip conditions will be better. Westmeath Anglers done well In the competition, with Mullingar Angler Barry Darby taking Top Rod with 10lbs 10oz. Joe and Jason McDermott finished 2nd and 3rd with Ballymahon Piker Mick Dalton 4th.  The Orange Rapala that produced the Trout also got me a small pike, and 5th place. Presentation took place in Weirs of Rooskey and we had a very enjoyable evening thanks to Frank Moran of Weirs. The Midland Pike Anglers are planning a club competition in early February 2013, and we will keep you posted on this event.
