Fishery Manager, Rob Love reports on fishing at the Carton House Fisheries near Maynooth
Carton House fishery report 06/12/12
Season 1st March – 30th September
The Rye Lake
The Rye lake has seen some activity in the form of Pike fishing over the last few weeks. Reports coming in from anglers have been positive with fish being caught on a variety of methods however the Pike seem to be particularly fond of rubber Perch and Roach imitations (hardly surprising given the large number of both species present in the lake).
Current hotspots are downstream of the boathouse towards the Salmon Weir and opposite the Island where the water is deeper. Anglers who wishing to fish this area can purchase a permit from hotel reception where they can also get a map of the fishery.
A Ghillie / Guide service is also available for fishing from boat on the lake – please contact me for more details on same.
Prices start at €25 for a 6 hour ticket and all fish must be returned.
The Sheet of Water
The Rainbows on the Sheet of Water have been getting a bit of a breather as of late given most activity has been concentrating on the Pike fishing on the Rye Lake recently.
The water is not particularly deep on this stretch of water and a floating or intermediate line is ideal. As usual the more successful flies include Goldheads and in particular flies with some ‘movement’ such as Woolly Buggers or flies with a gold head and palmered hackle.
With the most up to date weather forecast in mind and with temperatures due to drop off even more over the next week anglers should really take advantage of the lovely surroundings and great atmosphere in our club house where after a cold days fishing they can avail of full bar services and a selection of light snacks or more substantial meals from the menu there.
