A visit to Virginia today found Lough Ramor in fighting form with many anglers hoping to catch one of the many obliging pike being caught recently. Water levels are well up in the lake and the day was mild enough for the time of year but with a cool nippy breeze that would bring a tear to the eye. Two boats were out and one duo of anglers were fly fishing and caught and released at least 7 fish.

A report was received that one fly angler caught and released 12 doubles and three twenties recently at the County Cavan venue.  Brian McEnroe from Virginia had a nice 4.5lb jack on a dead bait while I was at the lake and released the fish so quickly that I had not even time to get a photo. Brian also reported that a competition on Lackan lakes over the weekend was won by a Ballyjamesduff  angler with two small jack pike.

Further down the bank two fishing friends Jan and Beno from Dublin were trying their luck. Jan had caught and released one fish of 70cm before I arrived and three other fish had been lost. I was assured that it would not be long before another fish would be caught and sure enough Beno was into a fish shortly after this not a big one but a fish none the less. Minutes later another fish was on and this was a much better one.

There were lots of small fodder fish in and around the shoreline that were attracting the pike in numbers. Circa 25 pike were reported the previous day with the best weighing in at 19lbs. As the day progressed the action slowed gradually before switching off in the early evening. I am sure that many anglers will return over the next few days to see if the activity continues. As all anglers know however, this will depend on a myriad of factors. Who knows though,  Ramor might well be worth a visit if you are thinking of heading out over the next few days. All methods including dead-bait, spinning and fly all produced results today.
