With the angling effort decreasing of late, the reported catch on the Moy has dropped significantly to 293 salmon for the week. Fresh fish continue to enter the river daily, although they are proving more difficult to tempt as the season progresses. The Moy Fishery reported 17 salmon for the week, with seven off the Ridge Pool and seven off the Cathedral Beat. On the Ridge, Eugene Farrell, Dublin, had one grilse whilst spinning, and Gerry Quinn, N. Ireland, had one of 5.1lbs on the fly. Gareth Byrne had three grilse off the Cathedral Beat on fly, with Wayne Byrne landing one.
Ballina Salmon Anglers’ water recorded 25 fish, with Mount Falcon reporting 37. Three generations of the Jordan family, U.K. enjoyed great sport at Mount Falcon, landing 22 salmon over five days, 10 of which were caught on fly. The mid-Moy fisheries fished reasonably well and at Coolcronan, Andy Anderson, U.K. had one of 5lbs on prawn.
At the Foxford Fishery, Stuart Sumnall, U.K. was among those to have success, landing three on the fly, his best weighing 5.5lbs. Upstream at Cloongee, visiting angler Olivier Samica, France, had three on bubble and fly, with the best fish weighing 5lbs. The East Mayo Anglers’ water yielded 39 for the week, with Stephen Orr and David O’Connor (both Co. Kildare) taking grilse on the fly, and Henry Cooke, Co. Dublin, landing one of 5lbs to spinner.
The Mayfly Hotel, Foxford, will host its annual fishing competition on Sunday, 26th August for the ‘Mayfly Hotel Charity Cup’ in aid of The Foxford Alzheimer’s Day Care Centre. Fishing is from 9am to 6pm, with registration at the Mayfly Hotel from 8am. Anglers can fish Gannon’s, the Foxford Salmon Anglers’ water, Padden’s, The Wood Pool, Foxford Rocks, Cloongee, Byrne’s, Armstrong’s and the Foxford Fishery. Entry fee is €25 and includes BBQ and entertainment following presentations in the Mayfly.
