On Saturday the 5th May a spring Clean Up was organised for the lakes in the Ballybay area. The lakes in question were Drumlona, Bairds shore, Bream Rock, and Lough Major. Whilst we cant tar everybody with the same brush, it is sad and disgraceful to think that both anglers and non anglers are leaving rubbish behind them after a days fishing or a day trip out.
Most of the rubbish collected were beer cans, beer bottles, and groudbait bags. However, more disturbingly needles were found at one lake in particular with god only knows what consequences it would have if somebody stood on it. Our lakes once known as beauty spots are unfortunately turning into dumping sites.
Approx 50-60 bags of rubbish was collected, more could have been collected but overgrown bushes and brambles hindered collecting rubbish in the undergrowth, and also the lack of man power.
A big thank you goes out to all who turned out to help with this clean up and also to Monaghan County Council for supplying the bin bags and the skip.
