Wicklow Boat Charter’s skipper Kit Dunne reports on an exceptional weekend of fishing including many Smooth-Hounds and one specimen fish at 9.3lb, while Thornback and Bull-Huss were also showing recently in small numbers.

After a period of high winds and poor weather at last it broke. Two group charters last weekend saw the end of the bad weather and a cracking weekend of light winds, flat sea and plenty of fish. The weeks before had produced only a few fish, the odd Ray and BullHuss.

On a great weekend we managed to get to the best grounds and the Smooth-Hound showed up in numbers just as they started last year. On Saturday 18th May Eric Salmon’s crew set out to target the Hounds over slack water with 6 crab baits down and it wasn’t long before a 5lb male hound came on-board LISIN. This was soon followed by a few more, the fun lasted for a few hours over the slack period of tide and they slowed again as the race picked up. There were a few quite small Hounds among them but that’s how it begins with young males in particular.

Geoff didnt mind getting this small one last Saturday after his 6lb Hound earlier.

Sunday 19th May showed a bigger breed of Hound off a new mark, we tested the grounds out for Huss and Ray before trying our crab baits at the right time. I threw 20 peeler in the cool box just to test the grounds. After a half hour with the crab baits out I wondered should I have gone to my favoured mark but time would only tell. Not long after Christopher Boylan’s rod showed a massive bend as he pulled into a sharp bite, He took the strain and steadily pumped up a fine Specimen Smooth-Hound of 9.3lb, measuring 103cms long, a fine fish and a great sign for the waters off Wicklow. Now the heat was on, and after another 20 minutes a rod buckled at the stern of the boat, Tope sprung to mind as the rod wrenched over but it became apparent it was a Hound. It turned out to be a fine Male Hound of 7lb but it fought like a 17lb fish, a typical male Smooth-Hound.

This fine male Hound weighed in at just under 7lb but fought like a 17lb fish.

Outside of all the Smooth-Hound action the Ray and Huss are starting to show with a great number of Gurnard, whiting and Dabs on the offshore marks. Next on the list is the Tope, we should have an opportunity this weekend to target the Pack Tope with some fresh Makerel.
