Jan Wetherings and his brother-in-law Anthony, regular visitors to Carrickmacross, spent a couple of days with Mal Mcleod earlier this week in pursuit of pike…

Jan and Anthony fished with me on Monday 30th September and 2nd October with a trip to dublin in between. They stayed as usual at the Lodge B&B where they were looked after very well by Geraldine.

On monday they fished a local lake but struggled to catch. In the end they had only 3  jack pike for the day. The “ladies” failing to play ball. It was a deep, deep water venue and with the current water temperatures was probably a mistake.

The following day was spent touring Dublin but the likely lads returned for more action on Wednesday. After a last minute change of venue we decided to fish a much shallower lake in the area. Again it started off very slowly and despite changing lures regulary and float trolling a variety of dead baits only a few jacks in the 2 to 4lb bracket were landed.

After lunch the action picked up and some of the bigger fish went on the feed and great sport on light gear. Most of the fish were between 6 and 8lb with  a bonus double of around 11lb who gave Jan a great scrap on light spinning gear. The lads finished up with 13 pike for the day and a total of 16 for the 2 days
