Mike Murray reports on the pike fishing in Portumna where big trout are rumoured to be hitting deadbaits…

The cold weather has had no effect on pike fishing here and boat anglers fishing both the Shannon and Lough Derg are catching up to 15 pike per day. There are also more and more reports of large trout taking deadbait intended for pike. One unconfirmed report suggests a trout of 13lbs+ was take on mackerel dead bait near Portumna Bridge. Although I have no photographic evidence for this catch one angler did show me a picture on his phone of a trout I estimate was over 10lbs.
