Wintery Conditions

18 January 2013

Today is cold, wet and windy with sleet and snow flurries. The water level had been dropping nicely but is on the rise again following rain and sleet over night. There are still no more fish reported and fishing effort has been light. The weather outlook is for continuing cold conditions with wintery showers.

Weather Outlook.

Today
Blustery this afternoon with falls of sleet or snow over the north Leinster, Ulster and north Connacht and also on higher ground in Dublin and Wicklow. Brighter in the south and west, but with scattered rain and hail showers near west coasts. Temperatures of 0 to 3 degrees for many areas, but milder in Munster, where they’ll reach 6 or 7 degrees.
Tonight

Outbreaks of sleet or snow tonight in east and north Leinster, Ulster and north Connacht. Mainly dry in Munster and south Connacht. Minimum temperatures will range from -2 to +2 degrees with sharp frost and icy patches.

Tomorrow
Very cold tomorrow with showery outbreaks of rain, sleet or snow across the country. Some dry periods also, the best of these in Munster in the morning. Moderate easterly breezes and temperatures ranging from 1 to 3 degrees for many areas, but reaching 5 or 6 in west and south Munster.

Outlook
Saturday night will be dry and calm but very cold with a widespread sharp to severe air and ground frost with the risk of freezing fog and icy patches. Sunday will be bright and mostly dry but very cold with frost and fog lingering in some inland and northern areas. Rain will spread in from the southwest during Sunday night accompanied by fresh southeast winds, and the rain will turn to sleet or snow over the midlands north and east – especially over high ground. Monday will be a cold mostly cloudy day with occasional wintry showers of hail or sleet with a continuing risk of snow over high ground. After a sharp night frost, Tuesday will be cold again with scattered wintry showers – these mainly near coasts, but many places will remain dry. Then more rain will spread countrywide from the west on Wednesday night, introducing somewhat less cold conditions for the latter part of the week, but it will remain changeable and unsettled.
