Drowes Salmon Fishery Manager Shane Gallagher reports:
27/05/2013: The spring and now summer weather remains unpredictable. The past week has seen everything from spells of warm sunshine to hailstone showers. The fishing also has had little discernible pattern. The week got off to a good start with 4 springers and a grilse on Monday. Conditions over the weekend were good, with a full moon on Saturday, but only 2 fish were reported on Saturday and one on Sunday, despite plenty of rods out.
On Monday, P. Mc Causland had an 8lbs fish from the Upper Mill and released a 3lbs fish from the Cascades, both on flying c. P. O’ Malley had a lovely 13lbs fish on flying c from the Mill Pool, S. Mc Neice had a 7lbs fish on prawn from the Blackwater and B. Likely had a 10lbs fish on toby from the Otter Pool. On Wednesday J. Rosbothom had a 6lbs fish on prawn from the Upper Mill and W, Rainey released 2 fish of 3 and 13lbs on worm from the Upper Mill.
On Thursday J. O’Connor had a 5.5lbs fish on fly from Lennox’s and T. Maurer had an 8.5lbs fish on Rapala from the Sand Hole, on Friday W. Koessler had an 8lbs fish on a self tied orange shrimp fly from the Black Hole. On Saturday P. Mc Sharry had a 5lbs fish on rapala from Peter’s Hole and R. Morrin had a 4lbs fish on Cascade from Willie’s Stone. At time of writing today, Monday, 6 fish had been reported from 4 to 7.5lbs. Two on fly for Fritz Eggli from the Mill Pool, 2 on prawn for Johnny Brearty from the Mill Pool, and one each for J. Atkinson on fly from Briney’s and P. Lieux from the Meadow on rapala.
The water level is currently at 0.69 metres at the Four Masters’ Bridge. The water temperature has risen to 10.9 degrees Celsius. The grilse started to arrive in numbers last year on the 8th of June following a rise in water levels. It will be interesting to see what the coming week has in store both on the weather and fishing front.
