Damien Willis of Lough Fishing Buddies and his hale and hearty Dad Aiden headed to the Wexford / Waterford coastline last weekend to mark Aiden’s 74th Birthday. Damien reports:

For 37 years I have fished with my father Aiden around the coasts of Ireland. I am glad to say that my father whom is now in his seventies is still as active as ever, we continue to take time out together in pursuit of another specimen.

A great weekend in Wexford. My angling companions this weekend were Des Cannon and my father Aiden.

Aiden celebrated his 74th birthday on Friday and as a surprise we all returned to a favourite haunt in County Wexford.  Estuaries hold some wonderful angling tucked away off small roads along the coast lines of  south Wexford. An estuary is a partially enclosed body of water along the coast where freshwater from rivers and streams meets and mixes with salt water from the ocean. Estuaries and the lands surrounding them are places of transition from land to sea and freshwater to salt water. Although influenced by the tides, they are protected from the full force of ocean waves, winds, and storms by such land forms as barrier islands or peninsulas. Estuaries are an irreplaceable natural resource that must be managed carefully for the mutual benefit of all who enjoy and depend on them.

Damien Willis - Passage EastAs the tide began to to rise we moved location to Passage east. A short ferry trip across to the small fishing village in Waterford Harbour. Passage East has a nice long beach great for fishing with some fine specimen bass being caught, other fish being caught on the beach vary from codlin, whitting, flatfish and pollack. It is possible to walk from Passage to Woodstown when the tide is out, this is a great walk on a sunny morning to take in the views across the river towards Duncannon. The annual Waterford Estuary Mussel Festival is held in Passage East every September.
