Wicklow Boat Charter’s skipper Kit Dunne reports on a cracking weeks fishing in and around breaks in the weather, after some bad winds we had a few breaks.
The Irish World Boat Team arrived to Wicklow for practise in hard tides and deep water recently, looking for 35Metre depth and a strong tide we set hook in a hole in Wicklow Bay. The southerly winds hampered play a bit but didn’t stop Pat Swan a local Team member who landed a Specimen Spurdog of 16.4lb .
Meanwhile a week later after a bit of an Easterly blow things settled again, in more favourable tides we set out for our favourite animal grounds. Smooth-hounds had arrived in numbers, they were small but getting closer to that illusive 6.6lb specimen weight. Bull-Huss appeared in numbers over both days with some to 13lb, while Thornback Rays made an appearance also. The best Thornback to date has been approximately 8.5lb, small by comparison to recent years but its early yet !
With weather settled even more and a few eager crews waiting, we expect and hope for bigger Hounds and the appearance of Tope this week, watch this space.
