The weather has been fairly unsettled in the last week with plenty of wind and rain but as ever there were still opportunities for anglers to get out and about with rod and line…

Godfrey Donohue took first place with 33 fish for 79lb 10oz. Angling guide Rob Love reports that the pike are feeding well, especially along the margins, in Rye Lake at Carton House. The pike in Monaghan have also proved eager to feed in recent days as Steven Neely found on a recent expedition to test some new lures. Over in Mayo a French angler enjoyed the pike fishing on offer with guide Kenny Sloan catching 7 pike in an afternoon on lure and fly. Greg LaTour at Lough Allua reports that the fishing there is going really well at the moment with a number of 1m plus fish landed by various anglers over the last couple of weeks. The Lithuanian angling club, Go and Catch, fished a competition on Lough Oughter on 12 October, and in just 6 hours 77 anglers caught 138 pike. the winners were Rimantas Kondrackas and Mantas Silickas with 17 pike for an overall length 10.29 m.
Congratulations to Coleraine Academical Institution whose team took first place in the 2014 Waterways Ireland Schools Coarse Angling Competition fished on the Lower River Bann at Magherafelt District Council’s coarse angling facility near Portglenone. An impromptu fishing trip to a small lake near the River Suck in Co. Roscommon proved more than worth the effort for two anglers when they managed to catch some good rudd including one fish of 2lb 4oz. Portobello Angling Club visited Lough Sillan recently but unfortunately the skimmers did not turn up in any real numbers and catches were all quite modest.
Junior angler Lauren Samblin had some great late season charter fishing over the weekend. Fishing onboard the Avoca with Jack Keating of Dungarvan Charter Boats Lauren had cod, pollack, ling and and blue sharks. Two eager anglers fishing with Ger Doran on the Wexford coast last week had 15 species on a variety of methods despite the fishing being the best.
Gales made the fishing difficult last weekend at Knockaderry but Ray Brett caught some good trout on a damsel nymph to 5lb. The Kockaderry Cup takes place this weekend. In a show of genuine grit and natural ability little Rosie O’Connor braved the stormy weather this weekend at Southern Counties Fishery in Carlow. She brushed aside everything the weather threw at her and managed to land 24 trout on the fly single handedly!

Tomorrow is forecast to be a bright, fresh, breezy day with sunny spells and scattered showers, some heavy, with top temperatures 10 to 14 C., in moderate to fresh southwesterly winds. By and large it looks like the current weather will continue – its going to be a wet and windy Bank Holiday weekend for most.
As always if you are going out fishing in Ireland over the long weekend, don’t become a statistic, if going afloat wear your lifejacket or approved floatation device.
