The poorer weather conditions of the past week saw angling effort drop quite considerably with only small numbers of anglers out on inland waters. Much of the midlands near the Rivers Shannon and Erne systems are very flooded and many thousands of acres are under water. Sadly there was no sea angling reported to us this week although I am sure there were a few hardy anglers out somewhere. Hopefully more anglers will get the courage to get out sometime over the forthcoming weekend and enjoy a bit of Irish Angling.

The fourth round of the Erne Anglers Float only League attracted 31 anglers on five loughs in the Roslea system in Co. Fermanagh and Paul Eyres from Enniskillen is still leading the league after a second place finish with 4 kg. of roach. All the loughs produced good winter bags of roach taken mainly on the pole. The 3rd round of the Dromore Winter League was fished on Sunday last 23rd November at Annagheirin. With the frost the previous night, fishing was going to be difficult on the day and this was proven with the top weight being 3.500 kgs. for the winner Darren Fairhurst. Down on Inniscarra Lake there was two important matches taking place last weekend. A team of French anglers from the Sensas 28 team travelled over to Cork and fished against seven other Irish teams in the Irish Sensas Challenge on the Coachford Greenway. The french were victorious over a Irish Sensas Green team with all teams catching good bags of small roach in sunny cold conditions. The Waterford and District Coarse Angling Club held held their final master angler match last Sunday on the Graveyard stretch and good bags of Roach were recorded by the anglers on the day. Danny Murphy won the day with 12.5 kgs.
Eddie McGuirk won the 9th heat of the O’Casey’s winter pike league in Co. Monaghan catching 10 pike for 26 lb. 8 oz. Angling provider Greg Latour reported some good pike fishing for a first time angler at Lough Allua. Michael Meiers caught his first pike of 102 cms and weighing nearly 20 lb. on a small roach deadbait and this wins our Catch of the Week. I just got some reports from the Leitrim area that pike fishing is excellent in the last day or so in the colder weather and hopefully we will have reports on some of the good fishing.
There was no sea angling reports this week but hopefully we will have more angling to report next week. As usual there is some interesting articles and news items in other news in the Angling Update including some good instructional angling advise on how to catch carp and other fish.
Be careful and watch the weather forecast before travelling afar. Some water levels have dropped on some of our fisheries but if you are going afloat please wear a life jacket at all times and wrap up well to enjoy the best of Irish Fishing.
Tight lines especially in Ireland,
Paul Bourke
