Another springer was caught on the Drowes yesterday. Shane Gallagher reports on how the river has been fishing…

Yesterday, Monday 20 January, was dry and bright. There was some rain and sleet on Sunday night but the water level stayed below 0.8 metres on the gauge. Colin Gardiner had a 10lbs fish from the Boathouse on black Flying C with silver blade in the afternoon.

The weekend was very quiet with very few fish seen though there were reports of one lost on fly from the Nursery Pool, below the Eel Weir. Conditions over the weekend were good and there were some very accomplished anglers out but despite expectations no fish were forthcoming.

In an effort to encourage an increased level of catch and release, especially for spring fish we are offering a prize of the latest GoPro Hero Action Camera for the first spring fish to be caught and released at the fishery in 2014. The fish must be a fresh, wild spring salmon and the release must be recorded by photo/video, verified and witnessed. (Terms & conditions apply).

There will also be a prize for the first fish caught on fly in the 2014 season. Fly tyer Denis O’Toole has kindly sponsored a selection of flies ideal for spring fishing such as the Frances, Snaelda, Ally’s Shrimp, Willie Gunn and the perennial favourite, the Green Butt Cascade. The flies are presented in a wooden inlaid fly box, hand made in Switzerland by Peter Zahnd.

Prospects

The forecast is for further showers over the coming week but amounts should not be enough to rise water levels significantly
