The salmon season closed for another season on the Munster Blackwater on Sunday. The river had an extension (fly only, single barbless hook, catch and release) to 12 October and given the poor conditions endured for much of the summer there was a lot expectation that the fishing would have to improve if the rain would do its part…

Ian Powell of Blackwater Lodge tells us that Last Friday another small rise hit the upper river about 0.30 and this appeared to put fish down. As it fined off later in the afternoon, fish came on the take and four salmon to 14lb were landed on the upper river in the late afternoon.

Conversely, on the lower river a couple of fish were taken earlier in the day as the river fell until lunchtime.  It then went quiet as the river was rising in the afternoon.

Kilcanwy
Bernard Seal had two fish to 9lb. at Kilcanwy on the upper river

On the Saturday Thomas Culhane all the way from Wisconsin hooked three salmon and landed one on his first day salmon fishing.

The last day turned out to be the second best day of the season with nine fish to 15lb. caught – including the first fresh fish for months.
