Ghillie Vincent Appleby reports on the salmon and sea trout fishing in the past week on Lough Currane from his blog at http://wwwsalmonandseatroutphotos.blogspot.com/

/7/14 Mr. Colin Lynam takes the headlines in the salmon and sea trout fly department with a grilse and 5 sea trout, fishing with his ghillie, The MD, all I can say is MD and Colin got their medication spot on, it’s a pity the same can’t be said for the rest of my noble anglers. Wind SW fresh and overcast with light misty rain throughout the day.

/7/14 Straight to the sea trout department, and first we start on the south side of the lake, Mr. Stefan Kaufman, caught a fine 3 lb. sea trout on the fly, while fishing with his ghillie Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com now we head north side, at the Bungalow, Mr. Joe Johnson fishing with his ghillie Mr, Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught a fine sea trout on the drift, also in good form, fishing out of the Bungalow, Cliff, caught 2 sea trout on the drift, while fishing with his ghillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com There was a nice westerly blowing down the lake with good cloud cover and just for the record it made a flood early this morning which is no harm and was badly needed, will be more precise of the amount in tomorrow’s notes.

/7/14 There was some good fishing on Lough Currane today after yesterday’s small flood. First in the fly   zone, with two fine grilse in the 3 to 4 lbs. class, was Mr. Ben Johnson of the UK, and finished his day off with a C&R Sea Trout in the 3 lb. class, while fishing with his ghillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com and staying with Mr. Neil O’Shea, yesterday I reported incorrectly that Joe Johnson, only caught 1 sea trout and in actual fact he caught 3 fine sea trout on the fly all in the 2 lb. class. Sorry for this discrepancy. Staying at the Bungalow, Mr. Neil Atkinson caught a fine sea trout of 2 ½ lb. on the fly while fishing with his ghillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com Neil was going to celebrate his sea trout with a cuppa tea but in the words of his ghillie, no tea after 4 pm union rules, so they all headed for the Waterville Inn for AA meeting with a good pint of Guinness. Now we cut across the Lake to the south side and the hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com an angler fishing on his own caught a fine grilse on the troll. Staying with the south side, Mr. Kevin O’Sullivan of Lake road Waterville caught a fine Sea Trout of 2 lb. on the drift, now we cut back to the north side, Mr. Donagh McCarthy of the USA and Waterville caught a fine grilse on the troll with his ghillie. Now we head back to the sea trout fly department, Mr. Colin Lynam caught 3 sea trout on the fly, fishing with his Gillie MD, and in MD’s back date department, yesterday Mr. Colin Lynam caught 4 sea trout up to 4 lb. again all caught on the fly. Wind NW light with showers. Amount of rainfall yesterday was 14.7 mm.

/7/14 All the news comes from the north side, so straight to the action, Mr. Kilian McDaid of Derry, fishing with his ghillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught a cracker of a salmon of 15 ½ lb. on the troll, after they dispatched my noble salmon, they put their trolling rods to one side, and went for a few drifts and caught 4 sea trout ranging from 1 lb. up to 4 lb. and were all sportingly put back to fight another day. Now to the sea trout hired out boat department of Waterville Boats and at [email protected] Mr. David O Brien and Pat McKiernan of Ennis Co Clare, caught 3 fine sea trout on the drift ranging 1 ¾ lb. up to 3 lb.

/7/14 Mr. Kilian McDaid of Derry, fishing with his ghillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com was in great form again in the C&R fly department with 2 juniors and finished his day with a fine sea trout in the 3 lbs. class. And staying with the Bungalow, Mr. Graham Elwood and Mr. A. Parsons, fishing with their Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 5 sea trout on the drift, ranging from Juniors up to 3 ½ lbs. Wind westerly light to calm with the odd heavy shower this morning and bright sunshine in the afternoon with reasonable cloud cover at times.

/7/14 I will start in the criticism department, there were 10 boats out and only 4 boats reported there catches so here are the Waterville fishery supporters!! First in the striking zone was Mr. Graham Elwood and Mr. Meurig Parsons, fishing with their ghillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 5 sea trout, ranging from 1 lb. up to 5 lb. and were all sportingly returned. Staying with the north shore, Mr, J. Smith, while fishing with his ghillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com caught 6 sea trout the biggest of which was 3 lb. Staying with the sea trout, Mr. Kilian McDaid of Derry, fishing with his ghillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com caught a Junior on the drift. Now we cut across to the south side, Mr. Liam Ellis of Waterville caught a fine sea trout in the 3 lb. class, on the fly. Wind NW light with the odd shower.

/7/14 I will start backwards with the evening shift, US and Waterville angler, Mr. Donagh McCarthy caught 2 sea trout on the fly, while fishing with his ghillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com Now to the regular fly dayshift department, first in the reel singing zone, were Mr. Graham Elwood and Mr. Meurig Parsons, fishing with their ghillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 4 sea trout up to 2 ½ lb. And last but not least, Mr. Kilian McDaid of Derry, fishing with his ghillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com again caught a Junior on the fly.
