Vincent Appleby gives a round up of the fishing on Lough Currane where anglers have had some good salmon and sea trout fishing in the last week despite the odd windy day…

28/8/14 Come Lunch time Lough Currane was neigh on at a standstill with a strong SW blowing down the lake but this didn’t deter Mr. Dick Elder, manipulating his flies and it wasn’t long before he caught himself a fine Salmon and his gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddyof www.fishingwithdom.com reported to me that Mr. Dick Elder finished his day off with 2 Trout. Now to www.fishingwithdom.comevening shift or as he put it in Extra time, Miles from the UK, caught 2 Salmon on the fly and finished his evening with 2 Trout. Wind as already stated with heavy showers throughout the day.

sea trout juniors
Laurence and Lukas
May it be the first of many visits to Ireland

29/8/14 Lough Currane saw some good action in the Sea trout department. We start at the Bungalow and the trolling department, two young German Anglers, Master Lukas and Laurence  Muller, had their first taste of Game fishing when they caught 3 Sea trout ranging from Junior class up to 1 ¾ lbs. While fishing with their Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com Now to the fly department, Mr. Declan McKibben, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 3 Trout on the drift and in Neil’s and Tom’s hired out boat department, the Co Mayo Westport Salmon and Sea Trout Blogers were in magnificent form in the fly department with 12 Sea Trout ranging from Junior Class up to 2 ½ lbs. Now we head down the North Shore, Mr. Andy Wishart and Mr. Gavin Wishart of Northern Ireland, caught 5 Trout on the fly, while fishing with their Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy ofwww.fishingwithdom.com Now we head across to the South Side and the hired out Boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com Mr. John Delap caught 4 Sea Trout on the drift and also in good form with the fly, was Mr. Bill Bullock with 6 Sea Trout, ranging from Junior class up to 2 ½ lbs. Staying with the Sea Trout, Mr. Mark Dorman caught 8 Sea Trout ranging from Junior Class up to 2 ½ lbs. While fishing with his Gillie Mr. Bob Priestley. Wind NW then veered W fresh to strong and overcast with heavy showers.

Yingchun Dong and salmon
Ms. Yingchun Dong of Dalian/Dayuqua China, caught a 7 lbs. Salmon, a 2.5lb sea trout and 4 junior sea trout

30/8/14 Straight to the action and a bit of history in the making I believe and for good reason, Ms. Yingchun Dong of Dalian/Dayuqua China, caught a fine 7 lbs. Salmon on the troll and went a step further by showing her fly fishing skills in C&R department and it wasn’t long before Yingchun, caught herself a fine 2 ½ lbs Sea Trout and finished her day with 4 Juniors and in the words of her Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com  all I did was net and admired. Now to the total Sea Trout fly department, Mr. Mark Doorman was in excellent form again with 9 Sea Trout, ranging from Junior Class up to 3 lbs. While fishing with his Gillie Mr. Bob Priestley. Mr. Andy Wishart and Mr. Gavin Wishart, caught 2 Trout on the drift, while fishing with their Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddyof www.fishingwithdom.com Mayo may have lost the Gaelic football semi final today against the Kingdom of Kerry but at least the Co Mayo Westport Salmon and Sea Trout Blogers were in magnificent form again in the fly department with 10 Sea Trout ranging from Junior Class up to 3 ½ lbs. Wind NW light with reasonable cloud cover.

31/8/14 Local Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.comreported that his clients caught 2 Trout and that it was hard going with a strong SW wind blowing up the lake, so on that note we will head upstream to the world  famous Butler Pool, where there were 2 Salmon taken on the fly. Now for the Sea Trout catch of the day and to get all the facts we head to the upper lakes and Lough Cloonaghlin, where Mr. Sean Brick of Tralee caught 6 Sea trout ranging from Junior class up to 4 ½ lbs. All caught on the fly, while fishing with hisGillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com

1/9/14 Lough Currane was on the quiet side and for good reason, my Noble Anglers were in a lethargic mood as they looked at the flat calm conditions and when the wind did get up it came from the North and as soon as they went for their drift the wind died down again as did their spirits, so they headed for the nearest bar, need I say more.

2/9/14 Lough Currane may have been lacking wind If you forgive the pun!! but when it did get up my Noble Anglers made the most of it and the hired out boat department of Waterville Boats and at[email protected] take the head lines with Marc’s Fishing Party from Belgium Catching 15 Sea Trout of which 11 were of the C&R department and 7 of which were in the 2 lbs. class and the rest were in the Junior class and as Marc would say, fly only. Staying with Sea Trout fly department, Mr. Phil Staniforth, caught 5 Trout to his rod, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy ofwww.fishingwithdom.com Now we cut across the Valley to the River Inny, there was 1 Grilse caught by an angler on his own. Wind SW light to calm all day and overcast with the sun breaking through at times.

3/9/14 Straight to Marc’s fishing party from Belgium, they started their day on the Famous Butler Pool, saw a few nice fish but sadly no rod benders, so they headed for Waterville Boats and at[email protected]then went out on Lough Currane and it wasn’t long before the action started and here are their catches, they caught 13 Sea Trout on the drift ranging from Junior class up to 3 lbs. Staying in the Sea Trout department, Mr. Enrico Fantasia of Dublin also had a good day with his fly rod, with 9 Sea Trout, 1 in the 5 lbs. class, 2 in the 3 lbs. class and the rest were in the junior Class and his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com said they rose a good few more. Last but not least a guest fishing with hisGillie Mr. Vincent O’Sullivan of www.vincentsfishing.comcaught 9 trout. Wind was all over the place, so you can make your choice, with reasonable cloud cover.

That is your ration for the week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.
