Cal Sheehan was fishing with his son Daire recently near Rosses Point, County Sligo. It was a quiet days fishing with only a couple of mackerel caught when Daire shouted “I’m in!”
This time he had hooked no mackerel. The fish skipped about and danced on the surface – a gar. The garfish took a small spinner and Daire did well to land it on very light tackle. After they took a quick picture they released their unusual looking fish.
The pair were disappointed not to have a set of scales as it was probably one of the biggest garfish they had caught and were sure it would have made a specimen.
