Richie Ryan tells us that there are still good reports of bass fishing in Cork Harbour. Whilst the easterly winds have made life difficult, a small window of opportunity arises each day for a cast. Wind against tide makes life difficult, reports Richie, but a short session is better than none…
And so it was this week that the Eire Bass guide set out to research fishing for some more tagging next week. Fishing a large surface lure Richie noticed a large amount of very small mackerel chasing the 128 mm Ilex lure. He even managed to hook one! A small bass of about 3 lbs was landed and released, another lost.

Shortly after this there was a large smash beside his bait and he stopped the lure dead. Before Richie started to retrieve the Lure the bass took it. What followed was a frenetic fight for close on 20 mins. Adrenalin was pumping with the fear of loosing such a large bass, not to mind the damage a lost lure would cause to this marvellous fish. Net in position, the fish was quickly measured and weighed. 11.3 lbs and 83 cm and a large smile of course !
As Richie was on his own the picture was hastily taken on the deck of the boat.
However this YouTube clip gives some indication of the size of this bass :
