Wicklow Boat Charter’s skipper Kit Dunne reports on a great April Day out with good signs for the coming season…
The forecast was looking bad for Saturday and Sunday so Kit invited a couple of friends for a sneak preview last Friday before the weather turned for the weekend.
It was always a chance day out but the signs were good, 2 weeks previous we had Ray in the shelter of Wicklow Bay so we set out further South this time. Accompanied by 2 avid anglers, Paddy Keogh and John O Connor we set out for a mark South of Wicklow Head.
We had a plan, I was to target Smooth-hound, John was on Ray and Paddy was trying for a mixed bag. It wasn’t long before the scent trail began to work and I landed the first Hound for the Lisin in 2014. A sigh of relief could be heard as far as Bray, the fish were in !
It was a little further into the day as the tide slackened when the first Thornback Ray showed up, Paddy was delighted with his fine fish and had another tale to tell on his very popular website, Irelandfishingdiaries.com
John was still chasing that Ray, his first Thornback was the target.
As tide slackened he threw on some colour, a bit of bling, a mixture of Mackerel, squid and Herring and low and behold, he lands a nice 6-7lb Ray. Not happy with just one John fished hard and managed to bag
3 Ray for his day, an outright success.
All in all we had a very successful day, 5 Ray were caught and a few hounds, not bad for an April day with the water still a bit murky.
