Billy Downes reports that while the water level is low there are a few salmon running the river. Not all anglers are meeting fish but Colm Herernan did. He met four on Monday (29 June) and landed one on worm at O’Connor’s and lost some on the fly. I nearly walked down on two as I waded at Johnston’s at 8.30 that evening.

18lb salmon
Kieran Conlon’s 37 inch salmon, estimated at 18lb, was released after a couple of quick photographs. This super fish wins Kieran Catch of the Week.

The outstanding fish of the week was caught and returned by Kieran Conlon (angling guide and casting instructor at kspey-speyguide.blogspot.ie) at the Rock Pool on Saturday.  This was Kieran’s first day to fish the Laune as a member of the Association.  The fish was estimated at 18lbs and had long tailed sea lice. This was not a case of beginners luck as Kieran is an expert angler as well as being an A.P.G.A.I – IRL Advanced Two-Handed Casting Instructor & Guide and he has fished the Laune many times before.

There were six other fish reported for the week among them Danny Joy who had a sea liced fish of 6 lbs at Connor’s early in the week.

There were no reports of fish on Beats 1 and 2, the Killarney Lakes or the Flesk.

Beat 3: The Beat 3 water is a bit on the low side but two fish were caught during the week.

Reminder: Start times on Beat 3 is 8am and not before that.  Reminder to visitors trout fishing on all Laune Anglers waters and on Beat 3 is by fly only on single handed rods with trout flies.  (No worms allowed for trout fishing)

Prospects:  A few fish are running the river each day and there is always a chance if you are out.  I expect that if we got a rise of 18 inches we would have a few days of good fishing but a mini heat wave is on the way.

Permits for Laune Anglers waters from now to the end of July only €25 per day.
