Brian Stevens, Slaney River Trust, reacts cautiously to the opening day catches on the Slaney which are amongst the best reported so far this season…

18 March: The Slaney was high but clear for its St Patricks day opening with  rods out  on most beats along the river.

Salmon
Andy had 2 great salmon on opening day estimated at 12lb and 13lb

The total catch was thought to be 9 fish which sounds great but the river is still a shadow of the it’s former greatness and many rods saw nothing and those who got fish worked hard but all had a great day on the river.

Slaney salmon
A few fish were also reported on the river yesterday

A small number of fish were also caught today.
