Ian Powell from Blackwater Lodge on the Munster Blackwater reports on the fishing and conditions on the river…

Damien Maher from Roscrea was practically the only rod out on the river last Saturday. He caught a spanking bar of sea-liced silver on Flying C on Kents on the lower river – the first of the May fish. Short, thick & deep – it weighed in at 10lb.

Damien Maher had the first May fish at Blackwater Lodge

The week promised much as the water levels were up a couple of feet and there were clearly a few fresh fish about. The river was just about suitable for the fly over the weekend but a further four foot flood on Sunday meant it was spinning only. On Monday there was a report of an angler fishing about 6 miles above Mallow who saw well over a dozen large (10-15lb) fish and lost one on spinner of ~10lb at the net.  This would suggest that the first of the large May fish had already made their way to the upper river. I also had a report from Kilmurry on the lower river where one of our rods met two fish spinning this afternoon – one large fish an one which could have been a grilse. There was more water on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Wednesday afternoon I went out for an hour to a high river with clarity just over a foot. I did well and caught and released a sea-liced 9 pounder on spinner on Lower Kilmurry.

9lb salmon
Despite high water and visibility of 12 inches I managed this nice fresh fish

Doubtful if it’ll be flyfishable today and it remains to be seen how much more rain will fall…
