Ian Powell gives his regular update on conditions and catches on the Munster Blackwater…

24 March: It was a mainly bright sunny day here today but rather cool due to the NW wind & with a few intermittent showers. Springer number 8 was caught today by Mark Roser. It was sea-liced & weighed 8lb. He caught it on spinner on the Island Stream on Lower Kilmurry.  There were a few other fish seen on the Kilmurry beats as well today.

Mark Roser had this 8lb springer at Kimurray yesterday

The forecast is for rain tomorrow evening, Friday & Sunday. Higher pressure building over Ireland for next week with milder SW winds & dry conditions. The level of the middle river at Killavullen (37km upstream of the Lodge) had stabilized at 1.40m until 16.30 today & rose just 1cm this evening. Clarity is about 6+ feet. The lower river at Ballyduff also stabilized – holding at 0.55m all day.  Clarity is 6+ feet. Water temperature at    Ballyduff: 8.5ºC / 47.4ºF @ 21.15 today.  Water temperature at Killavullen:  8.4 – 8.0ºC / 47.2 -46.4ºF @ 21.15.

The river was in absolutely excellent order for both fly and spinning throughout today. It remains to be seen how the rain forecast towards the end of the week will affect the river. At the moment, the river continues to improve steadily and is fining down to superb order, especially for the fly.
