Lindsey Clarke reports from RIVER DROWES – Monday 20th to Sunday 26th July 2015.
The Drowes had nice water levels all week. The gauge read 0.50m on Monday and the river gradually rose for the next 3 days and the gauge was reading 0.53m by the end of Wednesday. There was then a slight fall and by Sunday the gauge was reading 0.51m. The good run of grilse continued and there were some 40 salmon caught for the week. Given here are some of the catches taken from the Catch Register at the Lareen Fishery Office. On Monday, Bruno Valian recorded a 4lb grilse caught on worm from the Otter Pool. Jim Atkinson reported 2 grilse caught on spinner and Eoin McManus had a good day catching 4 grilse weighing from 3 to 4lb on a Rapala with 2 of these being released again. On Thursday, Michael Maguire logged a 3½lb grilse caught on a spinner from Red Roof. On Saturday, Bruno Valian recorded a 4lb grilse caught on prawn from Red Roof. Michael McEvoy reported a 5lb grilse caught on shrimp from the Upper Mill Pool and Frank O’Mara accounted for 3 grilse weighing 3, 4 & 4lb caught on shrimp from the Mill Pool. On Sunday, Paul Coulter recorded a 4lb grilse caught on a fly from the Island Pool. Chris Prescott reported a 6½lb grilse caught on a spinner from the Black Water and Swiss visitor Armond logged 3 salmon weighing from 6 to 8½lb caught on Rapala and fly. The forecast for the coming week is for a good deal of wet weather which will raise levels on the river again and prospects look very good once again for the coming week.
