Lindsey Clarke reports from the RIVER DROWES – Monday 4th April to Sunday 10th May 2015

The Drowes had good water levels all week. The gauge was reading 0.68m on Monday and due to heavy rains, the river rose to reach its maximum of 0.78m on Thursday. Thereafter the river began to slowly fall again and was reading 0.75m by Sunday. This was a very good week on the Drowes with great numbers of salmon caught and to date there are 29 salmon entered in the catch register! The grilse have definitely started to run and the catch consisted of good grilse and also good springer’s. Given here are some of the catches taken from the register.

C McDaid - 9lb

On Monday, Tony Parker recorded a 6½lb grilse caught on a fly from the Mill Pool. William Rainey reported a 7lb salmon caught on worm from the Black Hole. On Tuesday, Chris McDaid recorded a 9lb salmon caught on a Rapala from the Mill Pool and Seamus Keane registered a 7lb salmon caught on a Flying ‘C’ lure from the Old Sea Pool. On Wednesday, Brendan Burns recorded a 4lb grilse caught on a fly from the Upper Mill. Paul McCausland reported a 7lb salmon caught on a Flying ‘C’ lure from the Fall Run.

D.Olphert - 8lb

Eoin McManus registered an 11lb salmon caught on a Rapala from the Perch Pool and Joe Broderick had a good day recording a 9lb and a 10lb salmon caught on a Rapala from the Perch Pool and Trout Pool respectively with the bigger of these fish released again. On Thursday, Harry Lloyd recorded an 8½lb salmon caught on a Rapala from Briney’s and Marty O’Hara accounted for a 7lb salmon caught on a Flying ‘C’ lure from the Upper Mill. On Friday, Dave Olphert recorded 2 salmon caught on a fly. These weighed 6 & 13½lb and were caught from the Mill Pool and Island Pool respectively with the larger of these released. Saturday was the top day with 14 salmon recorded.

Karl Heinz Rang reported a 3½lb grilse caught on a Mepp’s spinner from the Eel Weir. Peter Schumont registered a 4½lb grilse caught on a fly from Tinker’s. Stuart Morgan registered a 10lb salmon caught on prawn from the Black Water. Jim Gray logged a 6½lb grilse caught on a Flying ‘C’ lure from the Upper Mill. Chris Doherty recorded a 6½lb grilse caught on a fly from the Upper Mill. Jim Morrin reported an 8lb salmon caught on a fly from Lennox’s Bridge Pool. Rory Morrin registered a 6lb grilse caught on a fly from Briney’s. Marty King logged an 8lb salmon caught on prawn from Melly’s High Bank. Billy Gilbert recorded a 5¼lb grilse caught on a Flying ‘C’ lure from Briney’s.

Simon Harris reported a 7lb fish caught on a Flying ‘C’ lure from the Terrace and Colin Gardiner registered 2 grilse of 4½lb each caught and released on a Flying ‘C’ lure from Mowat’s and Underfall. There were a number of other salmon caught and we are awaiting details of the same.
