Ghillie Vincent Appleby reports on the salmon and sea trout fishing in the past week on Lough Currane from his blog at http://wwwsalmonandseatroutphotos.blogspot.com/
11/6/15 Again anglers were today are preferring to drink in the bars and talk about the one that got away instead of manipulating their flies or lures, well gentlemen you lost out again big time. First in the striking zone with a double grand slam was US Angler Mr. Gary Schwandt, fishing with his ghillie Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com caught two fine Salmon /Grilse on the troll, weighing in at 7 lb. and 5 lb. Frank also reported that there is a good few Juniors in the lake, which is great news even though they are slightly earlier than usual, mind you only by a couple of weeks or so. Now to the evening Shift, Local ghillie Mr. Mike O’Dwyer, caught a cracker of a Salmon on the troll, in the 10 lb. class and also lost a good fish on his way home. Wind East light and overcast.
12/6/15 Lough Currane was on the quieter side, but at least one boat did see some good action. Local ghillie Mr. Donal O’Shea caught two fine Grilse on the troll, ranging from 3 lb. up to 4 lb. and for the rest of the angling community there was no comment. Wind East light and overcast with the odd bit of light rain at times.
13/6/15 The conditions were not exactly in favor of the fly anglers, with bright sunshine with a slack ENE wind, but Mr. Enrico Fantasia of Dublin, fishing with his ghillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught two nice C&R Sea Trout, ranging from 2 lbs. up to 3 lbs. both caught on the fly. Staying with the fly, there were a few smaller Sea Trout caught but nothing that would hit the headlines, so on that note we head for the trolling department and catch of the day and that goes to UK Angler Mr. Michael Fish, while fishing with his ghillie MD, caught a fine Waterville Hatchery Grilse of 5 ½ lb. and finished their day off with a fine Sea Trout of 4 ½ lb. It just proves even with the elements were against my Noble Anglers, you can catch my Noble Game fish out there if your manipulating your flies or lours.
14/6/15 The Salmon trolling department was fairly reasonable, first in the Striking zone was Mr. Damian Martin, who caught a fine 5 ½ lb. Salmon / Grilse, while fishing with his ghillie Mr. Junior Scully and staying with the trolled lure, Mr. Michael Fish was in good form again with a fine 7 lb. Salmon / Grilse, while fishing with his ghillie MD and finished their day off with fine C&R Sea Trout of with a 1 ½ lb. MD was also telling me that they saw a good few fish moving during the day. Staying in Juniors, Mr. Kevin O’Sullivan, yesterday caught 1 C&R Junior on the drift which he was delighted with, and for good reason, his Sea Trout Christened his new Boat, may it be the first of many good days on the premier Sea Trout Lake of Ireland. Wind was all over the place light and mainly overcast with the sun breaking through.
In Neil’s Hired out boat department, Mr Sean Brick of Tralee, caught a fine 4 ¾ lb. Sea Trout, caught on the drift on a Watson’s Fancy. UK Angler Mr. Michael Fish, fishing with his ghillie MD had some bad luck this morning, they lost 2 fine Salmon on the troll on Lough Currane and as their luck was out in the trolling department they decided to put the trolling rods to one side and head for the upper Lakes with their fly rod and within an hour they caught 2 fine Grilse on the fly weighing in at 4 lb. and 5 lb. Now to the backdate department and in Mr. Chris Fogarty’s words, Hi Vincent, Chris Fogarty here fishing Cloonaghlin Sunday 14/6/15 caught two salmon 13 lbs and 9 lbs put the 9 lbs back all on the fly. Now to the apology department and in the words of local Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com Report for Saturday Niall Greene caught 2 & quarter lb sea trout on the fly. Niall was part of Enrico Fantasia fishing party. I sent you a text but you failed miserably in your reporting duties ha, ha!! No worries, Tom. I only have one thing to say, Guilty as charged and I apologise for these discrepancies. Wind SW light with good cloud cover.
16/6/15 Straight to the Grilse / Salmon department, UK Angler DR. Alan Edwards, fishing out ofwww.butlerarms.comcaught a fine lightning fresh 4 lbs. 7 oz Grilse on the troll, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea ofwww.oshealoughcurrane.com Staying with the Salmon /Grilse, we cut across the Lough to the South Side, Mr. Terry Bradley fishing with his Gillie Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com caught a spanking fresh 4 ½ lbs. Salmon / Grilse.
Now we head back to the Bungalow on the North Side and towww.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com and his Sea Trout fly hired out boat department, Mr. Henry McCurry of Armagh, caught a fine 3 lbs. Sea Trout caught on the drift. Wind SW light and overcast with light and misty rain throughout the day.
