Ian Powell of the Blackwater Lodge tells us how the Munster Blackwater is doing:

Blackwater - The river below the Lodge on Thursday, February 19. Ballyduff gauge height - 0.55m
The river below the Lodge on Thursday, February 19. Ballyduff gauge height – 0.55m

It was a mild overcast day with the air temperature up to 9°C at 16.00. There were some showers seemingly heavier in the upper catchment. Mainly dry & cool until Sunday when a band of heavier rain is forecast.
Evenings are now getting brighter and it is possible to fish until at least 18.00.

Spring Tides
Spring tides will peak at 4.2m at Youghal on Friday & Saturday this weekend which should encourage fresh fish to move into the main river.

Blackwater - Ballyduff gauge - Ian PowellThe upper river has risen 16cm since midnight peaking at 13.30 today. It then dropped & is just rising slightly at 19.00. The clarity is 4-5 feet.

The lower river has crept up 3cm since 09.00 to 0.57m at 19.00. The clarity on the lower river today is 3+ feet at Ballyduff.
Balckwater - Millstreet gauge - Ian Powell
Water temperature at Ballyduff: 8.5ºC / 47.3ºF @ 19.00.
Water temperature at Killavullen: 7.7ºC / 45.9ºF @ 19.00.
The river will be in good fly and spinning order tomorrow.
There are reports in the last few days of a few sea-liced springers caught on the lower river which indicates they are running harder than before, as the fish which were caught in the first week of the season were not sea-liced.
At one of our beats at Castletownroche (20 miles upriver) today, one fish was seen & one lost at the net – both of which were reckoned to be spring fish.
