Wicklow Boat Charters Skipper, “Kit Dunne”, reports on a Specimen Spurdog frenzy over the last Month in Wicklow.:

With a reasonable spell of settled weather March became his most productive period for Specimen Spurdog ever. With a total of 30 specimen recorded in a 3 week period the Spur were at last getting predictable.

A mixed group of Irish anglers headed out on St Patricks Day, a few regulars, a Father son from Dublin and from Kerry made up the optimistic crew. As we steamed out the weather stopped us going offshore to the deep water so we stayed inshore for a few hours. The day moved on and the weather settled so we headed out deep. It didn’t take long to tempt the spurs and within minutes we were into a Specimen Spurdog, then another, and so on. We landed, recorded and released 9 Specimen Spur with 3 going to keen specimen hunter Evan Mc Govern.

On another trip a group of Dutch guests over for the Paddies weekend were delighted with their tally of 5 specimens and a few BullHuss for good measure. It’s a great sign to see Huss at this time of year.

Another group of Irish anglers tried their hand late in the Month, a few regulars, another Father & Son combo and a few friends from the North hit the Jackpot on a cracking summer-like day. 14 Specimen Spurdog were recorded, 2 BullHuss and a few more bits. It was a pleasure to see the experienced anglers fish right through the strong tides and take spurdog all day long, it’s no easy task with huge leads but it has to be done.

As the weather deteriorated after this trip and the tides began to build in strength were forced to sit tight until the next Neap tides from the 13th April on. It was sweet while it lasted and I hope they’re still around next week.
