Ger Murphy of Sea Breeze III out of Kinsale reports that Dublin angler John Harrington hooked a very rarely encountered thresher shark yesterday. It was an epic fight lasting 3 hours and John stayed on the reel the whole time. The reel was stripped on a number of occasions. The rod being a 20lb class was only just up to the rod the Shimano 4/0 reel really showed it’s class in lasting the pace. The huge fish was estimated to weigh in the region of 300lb, but as it was safely released after being unhooked we’ll never know for sure. One thing that is certain though, is that this is the first reported catch by an angler in Irish waters through we have had in the Irish Angling Update. Two years ago there was a report of a thresher shark breaching off Dungarvan and there have been occasional sightings and commercial landings, but this catch is a real landmark for Irish angling and we hope to see more caught over the season.
It must have been the weather as a second boat from Kinsale had another species rarely encountered by anglers. Dan Lynch of Halfway Tackle and the Irish Boat Angling Team was fishing on the Silver Dawn out of Kinsale on Saturday when he had a hake. Other fish of note caught on the day were ling to 20lb, blue shark and some good whiting, cod, coalies and pollock.
Over at Courtmacsherry Mark Gannon tells us his anglers were getting some decent conger and also a juvenile skate amongst all the other regular ground fishing species.
Adrain Nowotynski of the Rod n Reel out of Union Hall was also making the most of the fine weather this week and reports some good blue shark fishing is being had at the moment. Yesterday they fished at anchor for the day and so a had a bit of ground fishing as well as the sharks, although the sharks were plentiful and kept things busy. Best was estimated at 110lb.
Go fishing…
