Angling guide Michael Flanagan reports on the pike fishing at Lough Derrevaragh…

Lough Derravaragh has dropped a few inches in recent days, but we are still launching our boats where normally you park your cars at Donore Shore. Their is still no access to the slipway at Donore with high water levels.

I was surprised to see so many boats our on Derravaragh last Sunday, but it is producing some cracking pike as water levels drop a bit. Specimen hunters are also out on Derravaragh and some hardy pikers were camped out in their Bevies down along the shore near the Old Wagon. On Sunday the air temperature was actually colder than the water temperature, and you had to be dressed in your best thermal gear to stick it out on the lake.

Damian Grifferty was fishing with my younger brother J.J. and had a nice pike on the troll. The fish was a bit lean looking, but maybe they are coming on the feed. I teamed up with Barry Darby and we also just boated the one pike, but it was a beautiful pike that hit a colorful lure for Barry. The Darcy Boys from Mullingar were also out last Sunday, and Tony was along with Son Darragh who works in Dunne’s Store here in Town. The lads love their fishing, and ventured down to Lough Iron last Sunday via the River Inny.Tony said it was a lovely trip down river and they also managed a few fish on the way down.
