Midland Angling guide Michael Flanagan reports:

Last Sunday Midland Pike Anglers club members hosted a boat competition on Lough Boderg. This is a popular permit free venue for pike angling clubs, and is on the Shannon system with access at Dromod in Co. Leitrim. It is not a million miles away, and you will easily get their from Mullingar within an hour pulling the boat. When you get there, there is splendid access for launching boats, and parking space in Dromod Harbour.

Conditions on the day were quite good with a slight breeze, but it was bitter cold for the first few hours of the competition. Fishing was from 11am-4.30pm, and some nice pike were caught, with heaviest pike down the line taking the top three places.

Last week the Leinster branch of the Irish Trout Fly Fishing Association held their Annual General Meeting in the Greville Arms Hotel. Here in Westmeath many of our local clubs are affiliated to the I.T.F.F.A and delegated from our local lakes were present for this meeting. The Leinster branch of I.T.F.F.A. are busy working behind the scenes organizing Provincial championships on our lakes and Rivers across Leinster. These dates will be announced in early 2017 and we will keep you posted on what’s coming up on our local lakes. These Provincial championships are an ideal opportunity to promote our angling and our excellent Accommodation providers across Westmeath. Prior to the championships many anglers spend a few days fishing practice session on the chosen venue, and they all have to sleep, eat, and drink when drifting through the Midlands.

Good perch are also possible on Boderg

Michael Diffley and pal Darragh Healy of Rooskey fished the Midland pike angler’s competition, and I watched them net a fish not long into the competition. Chatting to the lads later they told me that a 2lbs perch picked up one of their dead baits, so I reckon a days perch fishing on Boderg is on the cards.
