Monday 02 – Sunday 08 May

The Drowes was running at low levels on Monday with gauge only reading 0.42m. Rain over the start of the week however meant the river started to rise on Monday and by Wednesday the gauge was read 0.48m but unfortunately the river began to fall again as dry weather set in towards the latter half of the week and even the fair rain all day on Saturday meant the river only rose back to 0.46m before beginning to fall again. It was a fairly quiet week on the Drowes with mainly visitors that were lodging in the fishery accommodations fishing. There were 4 salmon caught that we have heard of to date 2 of which we are awaiting details of captor, weight etc. On Monday, Stanley Kingham recorded a 5lb grilse caught on prawn from the Sea Pools. On Wednesday, Alain Blanquart reported a 10lb salmon caught on a Rapala lure from Round Hole. At present the heavy rain the south of the country is receiving is missing us completely and we have air temperatures up to 24°C and bright weather. Summer has arrived and there are Swifts, Swallows, Martins, Cuckoo’s, and Willow Warblers calling everywhere! The forecast does not look promising for a rise in water levels but it is hard to wish this wonderful weather away!

Lough Melvin

There was an improvement in the angling on Lough Melvin this week. The start of the week was fairly wet and the lough rose over the first 3 days of the week. There were a good number of salmon caught over the week and I have heard of 8 salmon caught to date all taken trolling. On Wednesday, Sean Maguire reported 2 salmon weighing 7½ & 8½lb caught trolling along the Garrison Shore. On Friday, Michael Stinson accounted for an 8lb 14oz salmon caught trolling.  On Saturday, the Rossinver Club held their annual Angling Festival. The day was somewhat miserable with persistent rain for the greater part of the day. A good was had by all however and the fishing was pretty good with 2 salmon recorded and decent trout fishing. The Open Trophy went to Stanley McMullen for the biggest salmon caught and Raymond Dundas received a prize for the second biggest salmon caught. Both salmon were caught trolling.

The Drowes Fishery is one of Ireland’s premier spring salmon and grilse fisheries. The river is some 5 miles in length, with over 70 named pools, flowing from Lough Melvin at Lareen Bay and entering the sea at Tullaghan, just outside Bundoran. The Drowes has a wide variety of water suitable for all fishing methods, including several miles of good fly water and deeper slower moving pools suitable for spinning and bait fishing.
