The Slaney River Trust reports on the activities from Wexford:

Fishing has continued in a similar pattern to March with steady sport along the river but with the main run yet to arrive. Fish are well spread throughout the system but in small numbers. Some of the lower beats are now off the mark and with perfect water levels for many beats anglers are hopeful of an improvement over the coming weeks as tides start to build again.

Kieron Conlon with a 12lb salmon

Thank you to those who sent in some photos. The star one coming from Kieran Conlon who landed this cracker, a beautiful 12 pounder at The Glass Door on the 31 st March. Other fish were reported over Easter which I missed in my previous report, one by Steven Orr at Clobemon. April has been slow but nevertheless some superb fish have landed.

Petesy McCaughey landed this 10 pounder at Ballycarney on a Sunray Shadow and Peter Wadding fishing at Tullow, had this sparkling 9 pounder, also taken on a Sunray. This was Peters first Spring salmon and first on the fly (which he tied himself) so a big congratulations to him.

Other fish reported so far in April include Paddy Varian who had the largest fish reported to date, a 16 pounder off Screens while on the opposite bank at Moyeady, a 12 pounder  was reported.  The usual suspects who regularly feature in these reports had fish including Brian Hennessy who got Tombrick off the mark for 2016 with a fresh sea liced 7 pounder and then on the same beat Mossy Brown had a small fish yesterday off the same beat. Rory Harkin had a fish on The Wood and lost another. John Carroll had his first fish of the season at Strahart.

Pat Donegan had this fish at Kilbride, Kevin Clayton had another fish at Clohamon while Ray O’Dwyer also landed his first ever Springer at Clohamon. Andy Kelly was in action again landing a fine 13 pounder this morning. We have heard of other fish caught above Bunclody but no firm reports.

Seal at Clohamon
Seal at Clohamon

We had another visitor on the river last week which is concerning, this seal was pictured at Clohamon, probably following the fish up in the high water, quite alarming. It is a first, as far as we are aware, of a seal swimming this far up the river.
