Guide Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane where sea trout fishing has been excellent at times…

1 Sep: There was some good fishing on the Waterville Fishery today so straight to the action. In the hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com Mr. John Delap caught 5 juniors on the drift. Now we cut across Lough Currane to the North side and the bungalow, US angler Murry  Beets caught 3 Juniors, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com. Wind W strong and overcast with mist rain throughout the day.

2 Sep: There was some good Sea Trout fishing on the Waterville Fishery again today so straight to the action. Mr. Arnold Slater, caught 1 junior to his fly rod, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com. Also in good form in the C&R fly department was Mr. David Burton of Yorkshire, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com caught 3 Juniors to his fly rod. Now for Lough Currane’s catch of the day and that goes to Mr. Liam McKnight of West Meath, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. junior Scully, caught two Juniors and finished his day off with a cracker of a Sea Trout weighing in at 6 ½ lbs. The rest of angling community they either caught nothing or too dam lazy to let their fingers do the talking, either way they have failed and let the angling and local community down. Wind SW with reasonable cloud cover.

3 Sep: Before we get today’s manipulations a Important Notice from Mr. Rod Robinson. We have finally managed to get a date for the IFI Economist to come down and give a presentation on the joint survey WL&RT and IFI carried out last year on the economic benefit of angling tourism to the Waterville economy. It will be at 7:30 on the 9th September at the Waterville Inn, all welcome. Now for today’s action or the lack of it I should say, we start with first thing this morning, it was calm and come lunchtime it was like the wild west, with a strong SW wind blowing down the lake, some anglers stuck to their battle stations and some anglers headed for calmer waters, ie the Bars and going back to the anglers that kept manipulating their flies, one angler said it was like a Chinese takeaway out there, all I kept getting was a Bird’s nest.

4 Sep: Straight to the Sea Trout fly department, We start with the Killarney Salmon and Trout Anglers, which had their annual outing on Lough Currane and fishing out of www.lakelandshouse.com by all accounts they had good sport with Sea Trout up to 2 lbs and the Angler of the day was Mr. Seamus O’ Laughlin, who caught 4 good Sea Trout and met well over 40 more. Now we cut across the Lake to the North side and the Bungalow, Dutch Angler and no stranger to the Waterville Fishery, Mr. William Woermeijer, caught 5 Sea Trout on the fly while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of  www.oshealoughcurrane.com. Staying at the Bungalow, Mr. David Burton, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com, caught one Junior on the drift, which was sportingly put back. Wind variable with good cloud cover and very humid.

5 Sep: Dutch Angler, Mr. William Woermeijer while fishing with his gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 1 Sea Trout to his fly rod and for the rest of the angling community they failed in all departments. Now here is a warning to all the anglers that have failed miserably in catching and in reporting their catches. Wind SW light with misty rain for most of the day.

6 Sep: Lough Currane was all quiet on all fronts and not surprising with the fog nearly to the ground this morning and one would have thought as it lifted plus a nice light breeze from the South some anglers would have seen some action even though it was very humid, to give you some idea this evening at 9. 30 pm it was 18c so on that note we head for the Waterville Boats and at [email protected] backdate department Mr. Marc Luyton from Belgium and party, we start on the River Inny, in the last few days they have caught 3 Grilse up to 6 lbs. and returned 2. So they left the Inny and headed out on Lough Currane and so far Marc has recorded 9 Sea Trout and his good friend Dirk has caught 4 Sea Trout. Just for the record they have seen a good few Sea Trout and the same goes for the Salmon.
