Emma Stanley reports on Portumna & District Angling Association’s “Boat House Cup” pike competition held on Sunday the 8th of October…
There was a decent turnout for Portumna & District Angling Association’s “Boat House Cup” with over 15 teams taking part. Some of the bigger sized Pike caught in the competition were approximately 95cms. The lake itself was quite busy on Sunday 8th of October with over 70 Anglers encountered on water, most of whom were Pike Angling. The conditions on Lough Derg didn’t disappoint as participants in competitions and staff from IFI on boats patrol had a calm day.
Up and coming Events: Herman Molenaar’s Predator Battle competition is already getting plenty of attention and there’s already 10 teams signed up for the 2018 competition.
Bio Security: As always, we would kindly like to remind all who use Irelands watercourses to please use appropriate biosecurity measures for themselves so to help prevent the spread of invasive species in and out of the water.
Water Safety: It has been noted by Birr staff that there are a number of Anglers fishing from boats and on banks / stands where there is deep water who are not using adequate flotation devises. We would kindly like to remind all about the importance of Life Jackets as they really do save lives. Adequate Flotation devices should be worn at all times and it especially sets a template regards water safety where younger Anglers are present. It’s fantastic to see the range of ages fishing on the rivers and lake of the Lower Shannon River Basin District at the moment and there’s a promising new generation of Anglers starting to emerge. However, the importance of water safety is something everyone needs to be aware of.
“Take only memories, leave only footprints”. As always, The Birr staff would like to ask all who are using the water courses in the area to be mindful of littering and to please use bins provided or take home their rubbish.
