Billy Downes reports that as of Monday 22nd of May the Laune is steady at 1.3m on the gauge at the Laune Bridge, a lovely level for all methods. Billy tells us he is glad to report that a few fish were encountered during the week and some good fish among them as well as grilse…

The best fish I heard of landed, was a fish of 13 lbs by Mike Fisher on Saturday at Johnston’s Concrete. Mike tells me that the fish took his flying ‘C’ after he had already boiled to his fly. Mike then discovered that the salmon had already been lost on the worm as it still had the hook stuck in it. I’m sure there is another angler out there with a story of the really good fish he lost, at the net possibly.

Kieran Conlon fished the Laune on Thursday and Friday and managed to meet two fish each day. He lost a really good fish in Johnston’s on Thursday. Mike O’Shea managed to meet two fresh grilse on the fly on Saturday. Kevin Collins had his first fish from the Laune for 2017 on Sunday a sea liced fish of about 8lbs, released at the Rock Pool.
Advice from the experts: Mike O’Shea Manager of the Upper Caragh and member of Laune Anglers recommends a floating line and super fast 5 ft tip. Whereas Kieran Conlon Professional Game Angling Instructor and Guide and a member of Laune Anglers was successful with a float/S3/S5 head and a size 10 gold cascade.
Let’s hope that this week brings a few more fish to members and visiting anglers but lest I give the idea that a fish is a certainty lots of anglers including this one can get a pull.
Prospects: With a few fish obviously running the river and ideal water prospects for the week ahead are good and it could be a fish in double figures or you might have to settle for a lively sea liced grilse – allow for the Heat Wave and the commercial nets operational from Tuesday to Friday.
