David McEvoy reports from the Delphi Fishery…
It’s hard to believe we have already reached September and another fishing year is nearly at an end. After our extreme weather in June and July, the weather changed at the beginning of August and our fishing picked up. We landed 33 salmon, most of these in the first three weeks, after which the salmon got their normal August blues. Sea trout on the other hand were good, with approx. 150 landed, mostly between .75-1lb and some better fish, the best of which being Malachy Donnelly, with a 3lb fish off Fin and Dione Roberts with a 6lbs+ fish off Doolough (This was more than likely a cannibal and it was also a male).
Since my last update we have landed nine salmon. Hugh Brennan who concentrated on salmon during his stay had four. Two of these were landed on the 20th, one from Finlough of 6lbs10.5ozs on a Willie Gunn and the second from Doolough of approx. 3.5lbs. His third was on the 23rdfrom Finlough, of 7lbs3ozs on a Red Allie and his fourth of 3lbs12ozs, from the Turn Pool on a Bann Special. Kevin Dolan had two in a day on the 22nd, the first from the Bridge Pool, of approx. 4.5lbs on a Calvin Tube and the second from the Road Pool of approx. 9lbs on a Cascade Tube.
Stephen Hegarty had a fish of approx. 4lbs from the Kings Pool on a Cascade on the 25th. The following day Shane Martin had one from the Turn Pool on a GP of 4lbs13ozs and finally Janet Watmore landed one of 4lbs from the Grilse Pool on a Pot Belly Pig.
Those who concentrated on sea trout were duly rewarded, with Brendan Keenan and John McManus having a dozen for four days and the dynamic husband and wife duo of Tom and Shirley Morrison having 42 for their week. We have availability for the next week, then the 9thto the 14this busy and then we have availability again. For those anyway interested sea trout are worth a go, as we have had some good numbers and the Daddies are only really coming out here now.
