Osgur Grieve reports on the Erriff, August 16th – 21st…
We have had 18 salmon for the period. The big news from last week was the catch and release of a 20lbs. wild salmon from Beat 5 by visiting angler Joe Pilkington on Thursday 16th. Joe was using an Orange and Gold shrimp fly in the Boat pool and managed to subdue his coloured fish after a 15 minute battle. Neil Spellacy returned and fished beat 3 and released 3 grilse of 3lbs., 5lbs. and 5lbs using a black shrimp and collie dog. Archie McCauley and friend William Marie fished for the day and were rewarded with a 3.2lbs. grilse from Deadman’s on beat 2 on a Collie dog and 8 sea-trout between 0.75lbs. and 1lbs. Bernard de Suza fished the evening on beat 3 and released a wild grilse of 3.75lbs from School house run on a fly called the ”kitchen sink”.
On Friday 17th regular angler Kevin Attride released a wild grilse of 6.5lbs. on an Apache shrimp conehead from Doyle’s pool on beat 6 along with 14 sea-trout under 1 lbs on a Yokanga gold. Regular visitor Andrew Beattie started off his weeks fishing on the 17th with a wild grilse released from the gauge pool on beat 9 using a Cascade. Andrew followed this up on Saturday 18th with 2 wild salmon from beat 6 from Nee’s run and Colonel’s pool of 9lbs. and 3.25lbs and a 6lbs wild grilse from the falls on a pink cascade of his own tying. Also on Saturday Seamus O’Neill landed 3 grilse of 4lbs, 4lbs and 4.4lbs from Altamot’s dam on beat 6 using a collie dog.
On Sunday 19th Derek Kileen released a wild grilse of 6lbs from Yellow banks on beat 5 using a Cascade and Kevin McDonnell released 2 wild grilse of 3lbs. and 5lbs. from Twin rocks and white rock run on Beat 7. Tuesday 21st saw the return of Colin Gibbons who released a wild grilse of 6lbs from High bank on beat 6 using a Cascade, interestingly Colin hooked this fish just as he was about to finish up for the day demonstrating that you just never know when your luck will be in. In total 50 sea-trout were landed for the period ranging in weight from 0.5lbs to 1.25lbs. At the time of writing there is a good flood in the river reading 1.58m on the gauge.
