The Rough Month of the Cuckoo is still with us as the weather flips from storms to stills and frosty morns to warm afternoons. Most areas recorded 1 ½ times their usual rainfall with up to 2 ½ times the norm in parts of south Leinster. Storm Hannah made for an unfishable Friday and the blustery conditions persisted through most of Saturday, so most of the weekend’s fishing was limited to Sunday.

Salmon anglers are getting some decent fishing on a number of rivers across the south east and south west. The Nore saw 3 fish caught and released at Mount Juliet in recent days and the Slaney had a few more good fish despite the floods there. The Munster Blackwater had a few double figure fish and a very early grilse to report. Over in Kerry April was described as a slow month on the Laune, but fish to 18lb were landed. Fishing on Currane seems to be picking up and a few more sea trout were reported from the Owenmore.

Trout anglers are enjoying the early part of the Mayfly on Loughs Derg and Corrib. In general fishing on the larger lakes has been a mixed affair due to the varied weather on offer recently, but some great fishing was enjoyed by those lucky enough to be out on the better days.

Pike anglers in Cavan, Longford and Roscommon are reporting good fishing, again, dependent on the weather. Congratulations to Albert Mc Namara, the new IFPAC champion for 2019. Albert had a nice bag of fish weighing 45Ib 1oz from a Roscommon venue in pretty awful conditions on Saturday.

Mark Theedom wins Catch of the Week for his bream weighing in at 11lb 2oz

Coarse anglers in Co. Cavan had some huge bream to over 11lb. Mark Theedom and Gerald Greene were fishing a morning session with Pauric McGearty on Saturday. The lads had great sport with the biggest bream weighing 11lb 2oz as well as a couple of fish in the 8-10lb bracket. Mark wins Catch of the Week for his big bream, but Gerard did pretty well the next day getting 8 bream over 10lb and 9 over 9lb!

Mostly dry and settled over the weekend, if a bit cooler, and turning more changeable and unsettled next week, with rain or showers becoming widespread and heavy in places. Becoming windy, too, with strong and gusty easterly winds developing. That’s just May for you…
